Biotechnology products have been tested under a varied conditions of use.
Testing for food and feed safety as well as environmental risk assessment
are government requirements, which must be fulfilled before a product can
be registered for commercial use in terms of the GMO act. Act 15 of 1997.
A further requirement of this act is that the product must be approved in
its country of origin, before approval will be given in South Africa (NDA website:http://www.nda.agric.za). Extensive local testing of products is carried out before commercialisation, and it is fair to say that varieties and hybrids with GM traits are tested far more rigorously than those without.
